No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.  ~Lin Yutang

I really do love driving.

Yes, I do prefer other methods of transportation far more than being driven anywhere.

But when I am the one behind the wheel

for whatever reason
it's different.
i don't think i know why.
Today, I spent eight hours in the car.

For three of those seemingly endless moments, I was the passenger. The blissful remainder, I was the driver.

It was cruelly hot. The sun was ridiculously bright, and even my overhead shields did nothing to ward off its pounding rays against my arms and cheeks.

My car radio has a weird quirk, in that I cannot play a song too loud or else it crackles horribly.

But honestly, I didn't care. Not even a little.

The windows were down, and the music was as loud as my stereo's odd personality would allow.

oh, the freedom.

a car is one thing. but my life...

that's another thing completely.

It's a relief, I think, to not have to drive my life.

i tend to wreck it more than i should.

What a relief to know that the wheel is in His hands

and I am asleep in the passenger seat.

The mind of man plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps. ~Proverbs 16:9

  1. awesome post! I was just wondering when are you going to announce the winner of your giveaway:

  2. Beautiful words. What a sweet picture, of us in the passenger seat.

  3. Driving is fun...
Getting stopped by a constable for a rolling stop guaranteed a complete stop.
But driving is one of the great American rights of passage. Especially, with a car with a crackling speaker.
You should listen to Les and Larry Elgart's Jazz Band. Now that is a treat with the big bass trombone.
Glad you enjoyed the ride home and you were safe!

  4. I love how you can take something as mundane as driving and turn it into a really awesome post!
I actually love but hate driving. Maybe that's because I'm a beginning driver though. I can't wait till I'm good at driving.

  5. :) I love this. We're a bit different in that I really like being in the passenger seat. But I do enjoy long car rides. It can be exciting and relaxing and fun. I love your simile of comparing driving to God being in the front seat of our lives, driving and directing. I'm so glad I'm in the passenger seat. I would have wrecked a long time ago.

I look at you and see all the ways a soul can bruise, and I wish I could sink my hands into your flesh and light lanterns along your spine so you know there's nothing but light when I see you. :: Shinji Moon
